Summer is here and although this article is late to the game I find it my duty to bring up an issue that affect those of us in the service industry on a daily basis. The issue is the constant bombardment of offensive smells that we must put up with as we deal directly with the public. I don't care if you are hung over, sick or simply unaware but in a densly populated urban area you need to be making sure you aren't polluting your fellow man's oxygen.
Body odor, or BO as it colloquially known, is one of the more pressing of the scent related issues so I will address it first. Some tips to combat it?
1.) Shower at LEAST once every two days, and more if you are doing any strenuous physical activities.
2.) Wear deodorant, there is no excuse not to go out of the house without any on because even if you are allergic there are hypoallergenic varieties out there
3.) this one is optional but if you are having serious issues with it there are certain foods (such as garlic) that you should stay away from.
4.) Your sweat glands stop producing as much when you age but this does not mean you can slack off, frequent showers and deodorant are still important even if you are older.
The opposite of this is an over reaction to body odor and it is what I'll call... too much Cologne...or perfume. Take it easy, only a small amount is ever needed and if you have a proper deodorant than you might not even need it. Similarily this whole dousing yourself with axe or similar body sprays is not good;I SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SMELL YOU ACROSS THE ROOM! You want your scent to be subtle and not overpowering. You making our eyes water isn't sexy. Some people out there are also allergic to chemicals in colognes and perfumes so try to be considerate.
This may sound a wee bit demanding but after two frustrating days of working and having to forcibly stop myself from vomiting because of the foulness wafting across my counter I can tell you, better that you put on the deodorant than clean my lunch off your feet. So please, on behalf of me and my nose and all my other brothers and sisters in the service industry, be aware of the scents you exude.
note: I am in no way an expert on health or wellness...so this isn't medical advice and don't take it as such because this article is my opinion only
